Gillian’s Classic African Safari

Introducing a quartet of excellence

Gillian pulled out all the stops to create her favourite itinerary: a 13-day three-country tour of the best game-viewing destinations in the sub-continent:

“I created this itinerary to combine the best safari destinations in Southern Africa and in this case more is definitely better. This itinerary will feed your safari craving, as well as keeping you wondering what new sights, sounds experiences of Southern Africa are born with each new day.

The tour starts in KwaZulu-Natal at the Phinda Private Game Reserve, known for its diversity of habitats with seven distinct ecosystems, beautiful scenery and an exclusive Big 5 game viewing experience at a luxury lodge.

Your journey then takes you to the predator country: the prestigious Sabi Sand Region in the Kruger Park. Stay at the luxurious Exeter River Lodge in a secluded corner of the Sand River where you are guaranteed an intimate and exclusive Big 5 safari experience.

The Zambian side of the Victoria Falls is your next stop and the perfect adventure interlude between the predators of the Sabi Sand and the untouched wilderness of the Okavango Delta. Victoria Falls is a spectacular sight, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World.

Victoria Falls is truly a spectacular destination that offers a wealth of adventure activities and great sight-seeing opportunities. A two-night stay at the Royal Livingstone Hotel makes the ideal vantage point overlooking one of the seven natural wonders in the world.

Your final stop on this amazing safari journey is the untouched wilderness of the Okavango Delta. The permanent waterways of the world’s largest inland delta adds a really unique element to game viewing. Nothing compares to the silent glide of your Mokoro (dug-out canoe) along the channels teaming with birds and wildlife.”

Day 1 - 4: Phinda Mountain Lodge, Phinda Private Game Reserve

Arrive in Johannesburg International Airport and connect directly by air to Richard’s Bay followed by a road transfer to Phinda Game Reserve. Spend three nights in this magnificent private game reserve on morning and evening safaris; interpretive bush walks; birdwatching and stargazing.

Meals: full board including local drinks

Day 4 - 7: Dulini River Lodge, Sabi Sand Region

Fly by light aircraft from Phinda to Sabi Sand Game Reserve in the Kruger Park. A game drive transfer takes you to Exeter River Lodge on the Sand River in one of Africa’s most prestigious private game reserves.

Another three nights here will reveal a completely different environment to that experienced in the Phinda Reserve further south. The Sabi Sand Game Reserve is particularly well known for its healthy predator population including lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and several smaller nocturnal carnivores; elephants and general large plains game support the pristine ecosystem of the Sabi Sand.

Meals: full board including local drinks

Day 7 - 9: The Royal Livingstone Hotel, Victoria Falls

Transfer by road to the Kruger-Mpumulanga International Airport and fly to Livingstone - the small town on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls. Transfer upstream through the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park to Tongabezi on the Zambezi River.

Two nights at this charming luxury retreat will give you ample opportunity to explore the world’s largest waterfalls (a mile wide and 100m straight down). Visit the falls from the Zambian side, the Zimbabwean side (highly recommended) and from the air. And there are literally hundreds of things to do in and around Victoria Falls.

Depending on your preference you options could include scenic sunset river cruises; canoeing safaris; walking safaris; lion walks; elephant-back safaris; scenic flights; game drives; spa treatments; art and craft shopping and a range of off-the-wall adrenaline adventure of which the white-water rafting is our top pick.

Meals: breakfast

Day 9 - 13: Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp, Okavango Delta

Clear customs and transfer by road to Kasane Airport in Botswana for a light aircraft flight into the Okavango Delta.

Spend four nights in this magnificent paradise. Most would agree that, despite the amazing Phinda, the might of the Kruger and the majesty of Victoria Falls, we have saved the best for last. The Okavango is truly astounding: an endless maze of shallow, crystal-clear water punctuated with reed-clogged islands, lagoons and massive game-rich floodplains. With abundant water and virtually no human impact this incredible place has remained intact for millennia.

Activities include the classic mokoro safari in a dug-out canoe poled through the channels by your safari guide; delta boat safaris; game drives; night drives; bush walks and exceptional birdwatching opportunities.

Meals: full board including local drinks

Day 13: Departure

Transfer by light aircraft to Maun International Airport from where you will fly to Johannesburg to connect with your homeward flight at the end of your classic African safari adventure.
