In the Ongava Game Reserve, which is a 30,000-hectare chunk of pristine African bush, there are three luxurious lodges. Each has its own style and atmosphere and all share the exceptional wilderness encounters in Etosha National Park and the exclusivity of the private reserve. Accommodation at Ongava Tented Camp consists of seven walk-in tents on wooden decks with doorway entrances, en suite bathrooms and private verandahs looking out into the great wild yonder.
The main lodge is a homely thatch, timber and stone construction that comprises the lounge, dining area, bar, large open verandah and shaded plunge pool. The camp overlooks an active waterhole and the untended bush encroaching into the camp gives it an earthy, rustic appeal. Activities include game drives into Etosha and walks and safaris in the private reserve, which also has several game-viewing hides and waterholes.
Etosha National Park is Namibia's top wildlife attraction and one of the largest game parks in Africa. Large herds concentrate around the natural waterholes making for excellent mixed sightings and rare interactions. Along with the predators and large herbivores look out for Namibian specialities: gemsbok, springbok, damara dik-dik and the black-faced impala. Birding is excellent with raptors in abundance and endemics including short-toed rockthrush, Hartlaub's francolin, rockrunner, Rüppell's parrot, white-tailed shrike and chestnut weaver. In Ongava Game Reserve there are good numbers of lion, eland, Hartmann's mountain zebra, the endemic black-faced impala and other antelope. A highlight of the private reserve is a walking safari in which you track both black and white rhino – with an armed ranger of course.
