Where to go and When

Most travellers are here for the beaches and Mozambique has some of world's finest. The most well known area is the Bazaruto Archipelago which involves a number of islands scattered off the coast of Vilanculos. The archipelago is now a national park so the marine reserve is protected and offers excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. The Inhambane Coastline, further south, also plays host to beautiful beaches and guests have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go swimming with harmless and mighty whale sharks.

Almost on the border with Tanzania and much further north is the Quirimbas Archipelago. It contains its own collection of islands off the coast of Pemba. It is more exclusive than Bazaruto as it is harder to reach and thus there are fewer tourists. And of course there is Maputo, the charming and chaotic capital city with its hustle and bustle, manic markets and kaleidoscope of sights and sounds.

Lake Niassa forms the border between Mozambique and Malawi. Its gin-clear waters stretch for hundreds of miles surrounded on either side by a wilderness of thick indigenous forest. Lake Niassa is easily accessible from Lilongwe, the Malawi capital, and its tranquil shores and relaxing leisure activities form a perfect counter balance to a safari in nearby Zambia. Using charter flights it is also possible to combine Lake Niassa with the Quirimbas Archipelago on the northern coastline of Mozambique, as well as the Niassa Wildlife Reserve. The cost of these flights at the present time is very expensive, however as more and more people visit these areas the prices are likely to come down.
