South Coast

Surf's up on the South Coast

Visit the South of Mauritius known for its spectacular mountain scenery, remnants of the island's colonial past and its lush vegetation. Mauritius began its history here in the south with the first Dutch explorers landing in "Vieux Grand Port" bay in 1638. Thus while the main port and the capital, Port Louis, is not in the south, it is here where Mauritius as we know it began.

Less developed than any of the other coastlines, the South Coast is not the tourist hotspot that the North is. The main reason for this is that the beaches on the South are not very sheltered, and the coastline itself features cliffs and steep sides. The Ocean here is also rough and swimming in many places is ill-advised.

However it is worth visiting for a distinct change of pace. Spectacular scenery, mountains and lush vegetation make for perfect walking conditions and while not a laze on the beach kind of area, some visitors prefer a little movement! We list a number of luxury hotels on the South Coast in our South Coast Accommodation section.
