Maldives Getting There

It is half the fun

The Maldives is a pretty far flung destination, but there are no shortcuts to anywhere worth getting to. After years of working in travel, we know that if you want to reach paradise, you better be prepared for the journey. And the Maldives is certainly worth it!

Having said that, getting to the Maldives is not too much of an ordeal. There are regular flights from India, Sri Lanka, Dubai and other regions in South-East Asia. As such the Maldives is easily reached from Australia and New Zealand, and there are now a large number of charter flights direct from Europe.

Virtually all tourists land at Malé International Airport, situated on Hulhulé Island, just 2km from the capital and largest city Malé. It is not far from many of the exclusive resorts in the North and South Male atolls. And Gan Airport, in the southernmost atoll of Addu, now receives international flights, mainly charters, though most airlines still tend to go directly to Malé.

Charter flight to island of your choice!

Once you have landed at Malé international airport, it really depends where you want to go. There is a 24-hour ferry service from the airport island to the capital, which takes about 15 minutes. The north and south Malé atolls are easily accessible by taxi boat while the more far flung atolls and islands are reached by air. Most of the exclusive resorts operate private flights with Maldivian Air Taxi and Trans Maldivian Airways from the international airport. And seeing as the Maldives is a reasonably small country, it will not take more than 45 minutes to get anywhere from Malé.
