Earth’s oldest island is an amazing place of variety and extraordinary experiences. From walking in a primary forest in search of several unique species of lemur, birds and trees to a tropical island paradise, Madagascar is invariably a place of cherished memories for everyone who visits.

This 12-day tour includes return flights from Johannesburg to Madagascar and visits Antananarivo, Andasibe-Mantadia National Park in East Madagascar and two islands in the Nosy Be Archipelago for a beach and nature best-of-Madagascar combination.

Day 1 - 3: Palissandre Hotel and Spa, Antananarivo

Say good-bye to the last vestiges of civilisation as you depart from the glitzy Johannesburg Airport and arrive at the ramshackle Madagascar capital of Antananarivo for your first night on the island. You will be met by our representatives at the airport and transferred to the Palissandre Hotel and Spa overlooking the town, five minutes from the city centre.

The Palissandre is a comfortable hotel with modern amenities a restaurant and an attractive secluded garden with a swimming pool: perfect for relaxing and shedding off the long-haul travel ordeal. Spend a night in Tana, there’ll be time to explore the city in greater detail at the end of your holiday so save buying your souvenirs and curios at the markets till then.

Day 3 - 5: Vakona Forest Lodge, Andasibe-Mantadia National Park

A 138km drive along the winding coastline of eastern Madagascar takes you to Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, famous for its unique flora and fauna including 11 species of lemur and the iconic indri lemur with its massive eyes and eerie screech.

Vakona Lodge is 15 minutes from the main entrance to the Andasibe National Park. Accommodation consists of 24 spacious bungalows with heaters (important in winter). All bungalows have a mini bar and en suite bathrooms with showers and hot water. The living and dining areas built around a fireplace. The lodge has a small souvenir shop and on-premises activities include board games, snooker table, swimming pool, horse riding and table tennis.

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park is Madagascar’s most well-known nature and wildlife reserve combining the Andasibe and Mantadia Parks. Lemurs found here include indri, grey bamboo lemur, brown lemur, and at night the eastern woolly lemur, white-toothed sportive-lemur, furry-eared dwarf lemur and rufous and crossleys mouse lemurs. Hike through the neighbouring Mantadia National Park for spectacular primary rainforest and rare birds and mammals. The trails are quite challenging but well mapped and your local forest guides will introduce you to many animal and plant oddities.

Day 5 - 6: Vanila Hotel, Nosy Be Island

The next stop is one night at Vanila Hotel, which lies on the untouched west coast of Nosy Be. The hotel has a wide range of facilities, including two sparkling swimming pools, four bars serving an array of cocktails and beverages as well as two restaurants dishing up fresh seafood and contemporary Malagasy cuisine. There is a boutique, massage room and a spa.

Day 6 - 11: Constance Tsarabanjina, Nosy Tsarabanjina

Secluded on a private island off the coast of Madagascar, Constance Tsarabanjina is the quintessential island paradise. The azure blue waters are teeming with vibrant fish and coral. and the island hosts stretches of wonderful white sand beaches. The island offers calm and exclusivity merrily proclaiming its idyllic policy of no news, television, or telephone to interrupt your re-acquaintance with nature. The only sounds are from a gentle breeze, the lull of the Indian Ocean, and the melody of the birds.

Day 11 - 12: Palissandre Hotel and Spa, Antananarivo

Take to the water again for a motorboat transfer back to Nosy Be and a flight back to Tana for a night in the chaotic exuberance of Madagascar’s capital city.

Tana is a hilly area well above sea level in the centre of the island. History and modern Africa meet in a jumble of cobbled side streets, open markets and street cafes. The city has several good restaurants and who can resist the Pirate Museum? Chronicling the notorious lives of legendary rogues like Blackbeard, Captain Kidd and Mary Read, the museum is a delightful who’s who of the 300-year old pirate trade that first put Madagascar on the map.

Day 12: Departure

Spend two half days exploring Tana before heading back to the real world as we transfer you to the airport for your return flight to Johannesburg and your connection home.
