South Madagascar Accommodation

Our favourite South Coast Lodges

Southern Madagascar offers a rich and rewarding experience for those who make the effort to get here. The coastline is pristine, home to some charming villages and breathtaking beach hotels, which provide a rustic retreat just a stone's throw away from white sands and warm waters. These establishments are generally smaller and more intimate than the resorts of Nosy Be and Ile Sainte Marie.

Heading inland, there are some lodges which offer a fascinating wilderness experience. You can spot various species of lemur, birds, chameleons and explore the Spiny Forests and sacred burial sites. Parc National de l’Isalo is easily explored from many of the lodges and there is even a mobile tented camp which allows you to savour the natural wonders of this region.

There are a number of top-class lodges in southern Madagascar, whether you stick to the coast or head inland. Mandrare River Camp is one of the most exclusive, a seasonal camp in an absolutely stunning location alongside the Mandrare River, in the heart of a wildlife haven and miles from civilisation.

Near Parc National de l’Isalo are two French-owned lodges. Relais de la Reine is a no-frills, no-fuss property that offers comfortable rooms, hearty meals round a roaring fire, guided walks, horseriding and soothing massages. Jardin du Roy consists of 20 elegant rooms with private patios that face out onto the lush gardens and swimming pool.
