A region of magic and mystery

Southern Madagascar is an enchanted region, one that is sure to captivate you with its strange and spectacular landscapes. In the interior is the incredible Parc National de l’Isalo where rivers run through lush valleys, and waterfalls cascade down stark rock faces. Colourful baobabs, verdant green succulents and swinging vines house a collection of lemurs, a kaleidoscope of chameleons and a smattering of birdlife. On the coast lies the principal port of Toliara (Tuléar) with its tree-lined boulevards, shades of bougainvillea and jacaranda and multicultural mix of French and Arab influence. There are a number of seaside resorts alongside breathtaking beaches offering some of the world's best snorkelling and scubadiving.

Southern Madagascar is home to all things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small. The Parc National de l’Isalo is a wildlife haven with over 80,000ha of mindblowing landscapes - Jurassic sandstone massifs rise up into the sky amid grassy plains marked by multicoloured baobabs, while riverine forest and dripping canyons host playful primates and endemic plants.

Further south are the coastal resorts around Tulear, the main port and town in the region, which is worth exploring for its jacaranda-lined avenues and fascinating blend of Arab mosques and French cathedrals. North of Tulear is the resort town of Ifaty, with its white sand beaches and Indian Ocean waters with tropical fish and marine life found among colourful coral reefs. Or you could head further south to Santa Augustine's Bay, alongside an estuary at the base of steep cliffs tumbling to the sea. The scubadiving and snorkelling are excellent and this region offers a more remote beach holiday than in the tourist centres of Nosy Be and Ile Sainte Marie.

Southern Madagascar is relatively unknown so if you want to get a better idea of the geography of this region then see our Map, which shows the major landmarks and lodges in the region. To get here, most travellers take a flight from Antananarivo to Tulear or Fort Dauphin and are then transferred to their lodge.

There are a number of Accommodation options in this region but many of them are reserved for budget travellers and backpackers. However, we have handpicked a few choice lodges that meet our exacting standards of quality and service.  Don't delay - contact us to plan your tailor-made trip!
