Once the home of pirates now a haven of rest and relaxation for holidaymakers, Sainte-Marie island is a place of breathtaking natural beauty and old world charm. Here you will find the Masoandro Lodge an eco-friendly lodge which not only adheres to eco-friendly practices but encourages their guests to do the same. The Lodge is set on a hillside overlooking the turquoise lagoon where whales frolick and colourful coral reefs await your attention. The restaurant serves up tasty local dishes with a touch of originality and a mixture of European influences. Relax at the pool edge from where you can look directly out to sea and catch the occasional glimpse of a whale fin (that is of course if you come between July and September). You can also engage in various sporting activities and cultural excursions from the lodge.
Sainte Marie island is not only an unspoilt natural environment but the Malagasy culture also remains relatively intact and unaltered by interaction with hordes of tourists. The main town of Ambodifotatra is small and inviting, the people friendly and the traffic virtually non-existant. Their is a quaint catholic church built in the French style and in its graveyard you will find gravestones engraved with skulls and crossbones, a local tradition. Truly there is plenty to see and do on the island, so don't miss a thing!
