Unique wildlife in Samburu
The Northern Frontier District, Buffalo Springs, Samburu and Shaba Reserves are a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts. Because here and only here will you get the opportunity to spot the rare Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich. All of these unique animals are relatively common in the area. Then there are the usual suspects, cheetah, lion and leopard which are all regularly sighted.
There are also a wide variety of birdlife, including many unique species such as the Somali bee-eater, Somali courser, Vulturine Guineafowl and the stunning Golden-breasted starlings.
Samburu is most well known outside of Kenya as the area in which famous naturalists George and Joy Adamson raised orphaned lions and reintroduced them into the wild. Both Joy and George wrote several books about their experiences here and there have been various screen adaptations over the years. The most famous of which is the film "Born Free" based on the book of the same name. It tells the story of Elsa the lioness who the Adamsons raised to adulthood and successfully reintroduced into the wild. The film itself was shot in the Samburu National Reserve.
