Peggy's Incredible African Fly-in Holiday

Unique locations, exclusive lodges and fly-in luxury

Peggy's favourite tour, and indeed a favourite for many of us here at Rhino Africa, is an amazing showcase for the diversity of landscapes, people, animals, birds and plants of southern Africa. Crossing the continent from Namibia in the west via Botswana to an island off Mozambique, you will experience an astonishing variety of destinations all the while staying in unique and luxurious lodges.

Your luxury fly-in tour begins with two nights at Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert; then you have two nights in the seaside town of Swakopmund exploring the Skeleton Coast and a night in Windhoek. From Namibia you fly to Botswana for two nights in the mesmerising Magkadikgadi Pans in the Kalahari and two nights in the watery-wilderness of the Okavango Delta. From Botswana you fly - with a stopover in Jo’burg - to Medjumbe Island off the Mozambican coast for five nights of romance and relaxation. The tour finishes in Johannesburg for an easy connection with your homeward flight.

All of our tours are created from scratch so use Hester’s Incredible Fly-in for inspiration and let our expert travel consultants design a tour that meets your budget, time, style and must-see and must-do requirements. For example, as a fly-in safari with luxury lodges all the way, this tour falls into our Platinum category but we can easily change all the accommodation options for a Gold or Silver category tour. Day 1 - 3: Little Kulala Camp, Sossusvlei

Arrive at Windhoek's International Airport and transfer by road (30 mins) to the domestic airport in the city centre to board your light aircraft flight to Sossusvlei.

From Windhoek you fly over the hills and wooded plains of the escarpment before the land drops several hundred metres to the Namib Desert. The Namib is world’s oldest desert pre-dating humans by several million years and an incredible sight from the air.

Your destination, Sossusvlei is the epicentre of a great sand sea protected by the gargantuan Namib-Naukluft Reserve - one of the largest nature reserves in the world. The landscape varies from massive red sand dunes which are the world’s tallest (another superlative) to grassy undulations, craggy mountains and barren gravel plains.

Spend two days at Little Kulala luxury safari lodge exploring the dunes and the private reserve and restoring your sense of peace in one of the world’s most sparsely populated countries.

Meals: full board including local drinks

Day 3 - 5: Swakopmund Hotel, Swakopmund

From Sossusvlei it's a short flight over the dunes, along the Skeleton Coast and over Sandwich Harbour to Swakopmund, a German-influenced resort town on the Skeleton Coast.

Explore the dunes, the ocean, the moon landscape and the town’s many galleries, craft markets and restaurants. An excellent add-on activity is the marine safari on Walvis Bay lagoon, alive with seals, dolphins, pelicans, flamingos and many waders and seabirds.

Meals: breakfast

Day 5 - 6: Heinetzburg Hotel, Windhoek

From Swakopmund you fly to Windhoek back over the desert with a view of the gravel plains and lunar landscape of the northern section of the Namib-Naukluft Park.

One night in Windhoek is plenty as this small, albeit neat, town cannot hold a candle to the extraordinary sights of Sosussvlei and the rest of your tour to come.

Meals: breakfast

Day 6 - 8: Jack's Camp, Makgadikgadi Pans

Fly from Windhoek to Maun and then from Maun, by light aircraft, to Jack’s Camp - a luxury eco-camp in the endless expanse of the Makgadikadi Pans adjacent to Botswana’s Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

Jack’s Camp is an extraordinary place. Despite all the attention in Botswana focused on the Okavango Delta and Chobe, this small and exclusive camp has turned the Makgadikgadi Pans into a mandatory stop for an incredible experience: the second largest mammal migration in Africa, complete silence, starlit sleep-outs, quad bike excursions through the pans, game drives and a charming rustic-chic colonial safari camp.

Meals: full board including local drinks

Day 8 - 10: Belmond Eagle Island, Okavango Delta

Fly from Jack’s Camp to Maun and then on to Eagle Island deep in the Okavango - the world’s largest inland delta - for two nights of game viewing on land in water.

Surrounded by channels, lagoons and game-rich floodplains, Eagle Island Safari Lodge is a luxury safari experience of a lifetime. Explore the delta in traditional mokoro with your expert guide, poling the craft through the shallows recounting the mythology, flora and fauna of his native land.

Birdlife and wildlife are prolific in the Delta and, even in the rainy summer, you’re likely to experience the gamut of Africa’s famous big game including elephant, lion, hippo, buffalo, giraffe, many antelope species and, if you’re lucky, leopard, hyena, wild dog and cheetah.

Meals: full board including local drinks

Day 10 - 11: The InterContinental Airport Sun, Johannesburg

Back to Maun and from there across the Kalahari over the Magaliesburg to Johannesburg for a stopover en route to Mozambique.

The Intercontinental is attached to the airport by an aerial walkway and the hotel is five-star luxury all the way as you’d expect. There is much to see and do in Johannesburg not least of which is to experience the buzz of Africa’s biggest city. But you’re bound for the soft sands and warm waters of Medjumbe and there’s no time to dally.

Meals: breakfast

Day 11 - 16: Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort & Spa, Quirimbas Archipelago

Fly from Joburg to Pemba and catch a light aircraft flight to Medjumbe Island in the Querimbas Archipelago off the north coast of Mozambican.

How does this sound: five nights on a tropical island with warm, crystal clear water, blue skies, soft white sandy beaches and coconut palms gently swaying in the sea breeze. Oh and you’re staying in one of just 13 rooms on a private island. This is about as exclusive and romantic as you can get.

Spend your days snorkelling, diving, kayaking, fishing, swimming and lazing about as much as you like. The evenings are heady seafood dinners beneath the stars with the gentle waves the background music.

Meals: full board including local drinks

Day 16: Departure

Tear yourself away from your sun lounger in time to catch your flight back to Pemba and from there back to Johannesburg and connect with your flight home. We think you’ll be planning your return visit by the time the in-flight security procedures have started.
