What you need to know about travelling to Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls Airport and Livingstone Airport both receive several daily flights from Johannesburg Airport. You can also fly directly to Livingstone on the Zambian side of the Falls from Johannesburg and from Kruger Mpumulanga International Airport. This means that you can combine the Victoria Falls easily with an itinerary that includes Cape Town and the Kruger National Park in South Africa. Of course the Rolls Royce of travel to the Victoria Falls is by Rovos Rail - a breathtakingly luxurious train journey through spectacular landscapes.

Victoria Falls & Livingstone Airport

Daily flights operate between Johannesburg Airport to Victoria Falls Airport (Zimbabwe) and Livingstone Airport (Zambia). The flight is about 90 minutes in duration. Victoria Falls Airport is about 20 minutes drive from Victoria Falls Town, and Livingstone Airport is about a 20 minute drive from the Falls. Rhino Africa can organise transfers on your behalf. Most of the flights leave Johannesburg Airport first thing in the morning – which does often require that you overnight at Johannesburg Airport prior to travelling to Victoria Falls.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, there are direct flights from Kruger Mpumulanga International Airport near the Kruger National Park to Livingstone Airport on the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls. The same applies to direct flights from Johanneburg to Livingstone every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Visa Requirements on the Zimbawean Side

  • Most foreigners require a visa to enter Zimbabwe, which can usually be issued at the border or upon arrival. The cost depends on nationality and length of stay.
  • US Citizens do require a visa (Category B) however you will be granted the visa at the port of entry (border post on your day of arrival).
  • There is no need to arrange the visa prior to arrival as you will be able to purchase one at the border post between Zambia & Zimbabwe during the Immigration Procedure.
  • Please ensure that you have US Currency in small denominations with you to pay. The cost is US$30 single-entry, US$45 double-entry, US$55 multiple entry – you will need your valid passport, itinerary, exit ticket, and cash payment for your visa.
  • If you prefer, you can also obtain the visa in advance by contacting the embassy of the United States.
  • British Nationals may also be granted a visa at the port of entry on payment of the requisite visa fees - US$55 single entry, US$70 double entry and US$90 multiple entry.

Visa Requirements on the Zambian Side

  • US Nationals do not need to arrange a visa prior to arrival. Visas for all US Nationals are US$50 single and US$80 doubleentry and can be paid for on arrival.
  • If you are a British Citizen you will also require a visa to enter Zambia.
  • It is best to obtain your visa before travelling in order to avoid potential problems and pitfalls. Visas can be obtained from the Zambian High Commission in London, and single entry Visas are also available at all ports of entry.
  • The good news is that the visa fees have recently been reduced for British nationals to US$50 for a single entry visa and from US$80 for a multi-entry visa. The multi-entry visa is not available at the ports of entry and has to be applied for beforehand.
