Mji Mkongwe (Old Town) is the local name for Stone Town and the locals could not be more right! This charming city oozes history and culture - and it is surely the most intruiging city in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Arabian influence is clear and in some parts it feels more like north than east Africa. The crumbling buildings, stone balconies, chaotic streets and colourful markets buzzing at all times of the day and night lend it a vibrancy quite unmatched elsewhere in Tanzania.

Stone Town is more than the remnants of Swahili trade and Arab conquest. It's a city of contrasts & its Africanness is unmistakeable. The Portuguese and British also left their mark as did the Indians. And all these cultures and peoples have fused together so much that they are now almost indistinguisable. It is the beauty and magic of Stone Town and you have to savour it for yourself!
