Located about 100km downstream from the
Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River, the
Lower Zambezi National Park is Zambia's newest park. Relatively underdeveloped, it offers an authentic wilderness experience, bordering on Zimbabwe's
Mana Pools National Park, in itself a large untamed wilderness area. The park covers 4100 sq km of mainly woodlands and savannah, home to a myriad of wildlife. The majority of the park slopes down from the Zambezi escarpment to the river, keeping most of the game confined to the river valley.

In the main the park is made up of woodland savannah ecoregions distinguished by the dominant types of tree, Miombo in the woodlands on higher ground in the north, and Zambezian and Mopane woodlands on lower slopes in the south. Most large mammals in the national park congregate on the floodplain, including
buffalo,
elephant,
lion,
leopard and many
antelope,
crocodile and
hippopotamuses.
In the river itself, especially during the rainy season, a network of streams, pools and grassy islands form and it is between, on and around these that the wildlife congregate. Much like the
Okavango Delta, the best way to see much of the wildlife in the Lower Zambezi National Park is from the water, with caneoing safaris being a favourite.
The habitat is also ideal for birdlife and any birder, whether keen or simply interested will be well rewarded by the variety and abundance of birdlife. Another favoured pastime around here is
fishing, with the fight of the tigerfish being the highlight. There are also other varieties, but there isn't much in the fresh water fishing world that can compare with landing a leaping tigerfish on the Zambezi river!
