The West Coast of South Africa is a region of remarkable beauty, an unspoilt stretch of Atlantic Ocean and rugged mountains that stretches from Cape Town all the way to Namibia. It is most famous for the thousands of wild flowers that bloom here during the Spring months (August to November) and cover the region in a veritable kaleidoscope of colour. It can be visited as a day trip from Cape Town but we recommend staying for longer to experience it all!

What to do and see on West Coast

The West Coast National Park is the closest destination to Cape Town, but you can also visit Namaqualand, with the greatest concentration of flowers! And you can combine a West Coast trip with some time in Namibia since the region extends to this country.

But the region is not just about flowers. There are an array of picturesque seaside retreats, far removed from the hustle and bustle of town, and fishing villages which offer a real insight into South African life. The Cederberg mountains are spectacular and offer great hiking and climbing in rustic surrounds while Bushmen rock art shows the remains of an ancient people.

You can visit the flowers and the wonders of the West Coast on a day tour from Cape Town - the West Coast National Park is just over an hour out of the city, as is Langebaan, Paternoster and many of the region's attractions. But it is best appreciated over a few days, driving through fields of flowers, hiking in the mountains, braving the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean, strolling through quaint fishing villages, marvelling at Bushmen rock art and much more!
