Mgahinga National Park is located in the south-western corner of Uganda, right on the border with Rwanda. It is Uganda's part of the famous Virunga Volcanoes ecosystem which also spans Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This volcanic area houses half the world's remaining mountain gorillas, with the other half in the
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

Mgahinga is the smallest national park in Uganda with an area of 33 sq km but it contains a great concentration of birds, animals and plants. The mountain gorillas themselves move between the three countries so they do not live here all year-round. However, the habituated
Nyakagezi group are often in the area and make for an unforgettable 'Gorillas in the Mist' experience.
The park essentially consists of tropical rainforest at the base of volcanoes. The landscape is lush and verdant with bamboo and mosses, much sought-after food for gorillas, and dripping leaves and wet bark. The volcanoes themselves are pretty spectacular and provide a dramatic backdrop to one of nature's most magical offerings. Mgahinga is a long drive from
Kampala and involves some pretty rough road so most travellers hop a charter flight to get here.
