Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge Information

Situated on the rim of an ancient collapsed volcano, Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge offers guests uninterrupted views of the Ngorongoro crater, a true remaining natural wonder. The most unique eco system on earth is home to over 20 000 large grazing animals, boasting the largest concentration of predators found on the planet. Ngorongoro crater is the largest of 9 volcanoes in this conservation area, Oldonyo Lengai being the only one still active. The conservation area is 8300 square km squared with the crater itself having an average diameter of 23 km. The crater covers an area of 250 square km and has an average depth of 600m. There are many activities available from the surrounding area which enhances knowledge historically, geographically and culturally.

The Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge offers 71 standard rooms and 4 suites, all of which look onto the Crater. Empakai Bar is open daily in the main lounge area. It has a warm and friendly atmosphere, very inviting on those chilly evenings at Ngorongoro Crater. Rhino Restaurant provides three meals daily, although varied options are available dependent on occupancy. As the lodge is situated 3500 ft above sea level the weather does tend to be a lot cooler than the lower lying surrounding areas such as the Serengeti.

Lodge Highlights

  • Enjoy spectacular view of the Ngorongoro Crater
  • On clear days you can stand on the rim and see the floor 610 metres below
  • The Ngorongoro Crater has been referred to as the ‘Garden of Eden’
  • Take a day trip to the nearby Olduvai Gorge
  • Watch out – the altitude of the crater means that the nights can be chilly

Game Drives and Bush Walks

What better way to inject your safari with something unique, than with a walk in the ‘eighth wonder of the world?’ Whilst the cool of the thin air caresses your face with revitalizing crispness, you can witness lovely views of the Ngorongoro Crater, see the distinct bird life, watch wild animals in their natural habitat and catch a glimpse into the lives of the locals.

A variety of different walks are available including hikes around the Crater Rim, Serengeti View Hikes and Olmoti Hikes. All walks are guided by trained and qualified wildlife guides who know the area and have passion for the jewel nature gives us. These hikes offer a pleasurable and beautiful full or half-day alternative to the traditional all-vehicle safaris. They also allow you to hike through traditional Maasai villages giving you a unique and authentic understanding of the Maasai people and their interesting culture.
