In southwestern Tanzania on the sandy shores of gently lapping Lake Tanganyika, the longest lake in the world, rise the mighty Mahale mountains. And high on their forested sides live troops of our closest animal relative, the chimpanzee. The Mahale National Park, one of Tanzania's true gems, is a remote and relatively untouched mountain wilderness offering a unique safari experience. From lazing on tropical beaches, lapped by azure waters to tracking some of Africa's last remaining chimpanzees, the Mahale's present the visitor with what must be one of Africa's most memorable environments.
With no roads around the park, exploring the Mahale is generally done on foot. While chimpanzees are the star attraction, the slopes support a diverse forest fauna, including readily observed troops of red colobus, red-tailed and blue monkeys, and a kaleidoscopic array of colourful forest birds. Walk fern covered mountain paths in search of chimpanzees and the other amazing wildlife and after a successful trek, descent to the sandy beaches of the lake for a well earned sundowner.
