Visit one of Africa's Great Lakes

Lake Victoria is the world's largest tropical lake and spans three countries: Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. It is one of Africa's Great Lakes - along with Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika - and forms the western border of Kenya. The second largest fresh water lake in the world, Lake Victoria dominates the area with its 70,000 km2 surface. Although at it's deepest it is only 80metres to the bottom!

What to do and What to see

Lake Victoria is the source of the White Nile, first discovered by the European explorer John Hanning Speke. It is important to note that Lake Victoria is riddled with bilharzia, so avoid swimming or walking barefoot through the grass along its shores, as this is where the parasite-hosting snails lurk.

A trip to Lake Victoria is almost like stepping back in time. There are no hordes of tourists or safari vehicles - just endless blue water and lakeside villages stretching as far as the eye can see. You can sail across the lake on a dhow and go fishing with the locals. The Nile Perch was introduced to the lake and this massive fish can grow as big as a man, which makes catching one all the more exciting. You can also cast your line for the delicious tilapia (bream) while the locals throw their nets out at night for kapenta.
