Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park home to tree climbing Lions is nestled at the base of the escarpment on the eastern side of the Great Rift Valley. The Great Rift forms part of a fault in the earth's crust which runs 800 km from Turkey to the mouth of the Zambezi River in Mozambique. The word Manyara is of a Masaai origin which is a thin succulent cactus like plant known as "Euphorbia Tincalli". This plant was grown for livestock stockades.

It’s a small park, and more than two thirds of it is covered by water. It is one of Tanzania’s most popular destinations. This area is where Iain Douglas Hamilton and his wife lived in 1970’s and conducted much research into Elephants. In addition to rich wildlife the area has a stunning array of birds. Pelicans perch in trees, and flamingos are sometimes found along the water’s edge.
