You can get to Katavi by road, but we advise you take a flight. The drive while scenic, is not for the faint hearted.
The drive to Katavi from Mbeya is 600 kilometres of rough going, however if you are prepared to endure the jolting drive the scenery enroute is well worth it. In the dry season you could drive from Kigoma which is only 400 kilometres away, attempting the same drive in the rainy season would require some sort of hybrid boat car and unless your name is James Bond, you probably don't have access to one of those.
The Tanganyika Flying Company runs flights to Katavi from Arusha twice a week. You can also take a chartered flight from Dar es Salaam or Arusha. We also recommend combining your tour of Katavi with a stay in the Mahale National Park because they are on the same flight path.
However you decide to get to Katavi, your Rhino Africa consultant will be able to organize all your transport needs.
