Dar es Salaam means
'Haven of Peace' and was essentially created by the ruler of
Zanzibar, Sultan Majid, who decided to build himself a palace on the mainland in 1866. From the 1890s onwards though, it was occuppied by the Germans as they decided to make it their principal port instead of Bagamoyo further north. The British took over after World War One before the country became independent in 1961. It remained separate from
Zanzibar until 1963 when the island became independent itself. A union between Tanganyika and
Zanzibar was formed, leading to modern-day Tanzania.
Now, Dar es Salaam is a busy, bustling and cosmopolitan city which showcases the diversity of people and cultures within Tanzania. It may not be the most stunning or ancient of cities but it is pleasant, attractive and evokes a vivid sense of this enchanted country.
