Most travellers usually spend at least a night in Arusha during their East African adventure. And while the town really functions as a transit point, it is pleasant enough in its own right. The streets are lively and bustling and it is one of the few places (after
Dar es Salaam) where you can stock up on luxuries and necessities. The people are friendly, the views of Mount Meru are stunning and you can venture into
Arusha National Park with its alkaline lakes or montane forest. Or you could summit the volcanic
Mount Meru - a three-day trek that is less crowded, quicker and cheaper than its more famous neighbour
Kilimanjaro. The best thing about Arusha is it's proximity to so many of Tanzania's major destinations
Lake Manyara,
Tarangire National Park and of course, the
Ngorongoro Crater and
Serengeti Plains.
