One of the most popular things about Sun City is its accessibility. The resort is located about 2 hours North West of Johannesburg Airport. Affordable scheduled and private road transfers can be arranged to pick you up from Johannesburg Airport or a hotel of your choice in Johannesburg or Sandton. Scheduled flights from Johannesburg to Sun City have ceased operation ( as the road transfer is so simple ). Six flights a week fly between Cape Town and Sun City making it accessible for guests travelling from Cape Town and the Garden Route. Its possible to collect and drop off your hire car from Sun City.
Pilanesberg Airport
Following a R1,5 million terminal upgrade in November 2001, and the granting of an international licence in January 2002, the airport now caters for international passengers. The upgrade provided for customs and immigration officials as well as a runway capable of handling aircraft in the Boeing 737-200 category. These are: MD80s (172 passengers), and DC9s (109 passengers). With a bit of preplanning and in consultation with your Rhino Africa consultant it is possible to utilise Pilanesberg Airport as an international airport and customs can be cleared here ideal for groups who wish to charter their own flights from Victoria Falls or surrounding countries.
Getting to Madikwe
Madikwe is only a 3.5 hour drive from Johannesburg Airport and therefore makes an ideal self drive destination. The last section is on dirt track road and we therefore advise that guests do not arrive after dark for their own personal safety. Federal Air operate an affordable daily scheduled charter between Johannesburg International Airport and Madikwe Game Reserve, provided that one full leg of this trip is flown between Johannesburg Airport and Madikwe the second leg of your trip can be diverted via Sun City . This therefore facilitates combining time at Madikwe Game Reserve with time at Sun City. Major roadworks between Sun City and Madikwe are improving the road and in future making this a vary viable self drive option as well.
Daily flights to Gabarone from Cape Town
Situated on the border between South Africa and Botswana Madikwe Game Reserve is very close to Gabarone. Affordable direct daily flights operate between Gabarone and Cape Town making it easy to visit the area without the need to detour via Johannesburg Airport. Road transfers from Gabarone and Madikwe Game Reserve take about 45 minutes ensuring your arrival at the lodge of your choice by lunchtime. Just dont forget your passport several travellers have been known to forget that you need a passport to visit Botswana !
