Self Drive Safari to Madikwe Game Reserve

South Africa is often described as a world in one country. With beaches and snow; mountains and semi-desert; and sprawling cities surrounded by pristine wilderness, few would argue. To experience the changing faces of this beautiful land, we recommend a self-drive safari to Madikwe Game Reserve. Madikwe is situated in the North West Province along the South African border with Botswana in a rugged, malaria-free area that is part savanna bushveld and part Kalahari thornveld.

The drive from Jo'burg will take between three and four hours depending on how far inside the park you are going and which gate you are heading for. Whichever route you take, the R24 gets you out of Jo'burg smartly enough and soon you'll be whizzing through game farms, mountain ranges and rural countryside. Many people like to combine their safari with a short stay at the larger-than-life Sun City Resort, which is about an hour's drive from Madikwe and well worth a visit. Whether you are overnighting at the resort or driving straight through, aim to be at your lodge by 1pm in time for lunch, a dip and a doze; your first game drive will begin that afternoon at about 4pm.

All of the lodges are accessible in a humble sedan. The roads leading to the reserves are paved and the main gravel roads within are kept in excellent condition. A self-drive safari offers flexibility and a fascinating journey to each lodge. If time is critical and money is not, we recommend a fly-in safari – the option that places more emphasis on being there, and less on getting there.
