The castle was built in 1914 by Count von Schwerin for his fiancé, Margarethe von Heinitz and we say, with apologies to the original scribe, greater love hath no man... Perched on a hill overlooking the city, the castle Hotel Heinitzburg has been restored to its former glory; and then overshadowed it with a few nifty features like a massive wine cellar built into the rock foundations, haute cuisine, air conditioning, a large outdoor swimming pool, and the Relais & Châteaux seal of approval.

Heinitzburg Hotel has 16 elegant rooms with en suite bathrooms, four-poster beds, heating, and charming antique pieces. Leo's serves excellent French cuisine and overlooks the city lights of Windhoek; the garden terrace basks in the clear highlands morning air; and the knight's room is a banqueting hall in the depths of the castle.

Heinitzburg Hotel: city views or cloistered decadence

The Heinitzburg is near the city centre and removed from the mild hubbub by its elevated position. The garden terrace and pool look out over the downtown Windhoek and at night the city lights give the impression of a teeming metropolis below. Inside the castle, the wine cellar is built into the bedrock and an enchanting place in which to spend a romantic and intimate dinner; the banquet room is also in the original castle and the artworks and period pieces lend an air of mischievous decadence.
