Cape Cross Lodge is beyond the tactile stench of the world's largest colony of breeding Cape fur seals and as close to the ocean as you can get without requiring stilts. But forget about lazy days in the sunshine splashing about in the surf: the wind, cooled by leagues of Antarctic currents, is uncivil and the water positively hostile. No, Cape Cross is all about cosiness.
The view is sustained through French doors and ample sea-facing balconies, and the cheery calm within contrasts with tempestuous disturbance without. The hotel has 20 comfortable and spacious rooms with en suite bathrooms and private balconies facing the sea and the setting sun. The living area has a large veranda for those rare sunny days, a lounge and bar, a wine cellar and a dining area that faces the sea.
About 120km north of the Swakopmund, and the last vestiges of civilisation along the Skeleton Coast, and aeons away from the desolation that surrounds it, stands Cape Cross Lodge - a small and comfortable hotel that looks like sprawling home in suburban Orlando.
