Swakopmund rose from the sandy plains of the
Skeleton Coast late in the 19th century when Imperial Germany took an interest. Its architecture is now an eclectic mix of architecture, which is – we must be honest – a little bit of a visual oddity. However despite this Swakopmund remains a delightful town with no shortage of coffee shops, souvenir stalls and activity punters. For such a small, isolated village, your days are easily filled, whether it's high adventure or the intricacies of nature that interest you.
About 40km south of Swakopmund is the port town of
Walvis Bay. A natural bay provides rare protection on this jagged coast and Walvis has a bustling maritime feel to it that doesn't really lend itsself to tourism. The 10km-wide lagoon does lend itself to the prolific breeding of water birds and, in together with neighbouring Sandwich Harbour, is a world-renowned wetlands birding site
In and around the two towns and up the endless
Skeleton Coast there is a profusion of activities and excursions. Discover a rich world of marine life supported by the Benguela current and the fascinating creatures and scenes of the desert on your back yard. Adventure-lovers can get their fix with
skydiving,
quad biking,
sand-boarding,
deep sea fishing,
crayfish diving and whatever else the locals can dream up.
