A rocky hill looks out across the aching plains of the Namib Desert towards the towering dunes of Sossusvlei. Perched atop this barren sentinel is Sossusvlei Wilderness Camp, one of four luxurious lodges in the privately owned Kulala Wilderness Reserve. The lodge is a cool and spacious retreat from the desolate expanse of ancient desert that surrounds it.

Nine suites have been built into the side of the mountain using rock, timber and thatch. Each suite has an en suite bathroom with a view across the desert; the bedrooms open onto a private deck with a plunge pool. The main lodge is under deep thatch and features a large dining area, comfortable lounge and a large open deck for starlit dinners.

The dunes around Sossusvlei, Dead Vlei and Hidden Vlei are among the highest – and oldest – in the world. Sossusvlei Wilderness Camp takes you through a private gate into the Namib Naukluft Park on early morning excursions to the dunes – to beat the heat and get the best light for photography – and finishes off with a wonderful breakfast in the desert. Afternoons will see you going on nature walks through the private reserve and sundowner night drives in search of the elusive nocturnal creatures of the desert. Flora and fauna is fascinating and in addition to the many plants and endemic birds you may well see gemsbok, springbok, wild ostriches, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, hares, jackals and the shy spotted hyena.
