Lodges whose rooms number in the double figures are considered large in Namibia and the Namib Desert Lodge, with 55 rooms, is a relative sprawling metropolis. Set in its own private reserve about 60km north of Sesriem – the entrance to Sossusvlei – Namib Desert Lodge owes much of its charm to the stark beauty the surrounds it.

The rooms themselves are simple, functional and comfortable and the main lodge – with lounge, wine bar and dining area - surrounds a large swimming pool and faces out over the endless and timeless Namib Desert. Behind the lodge is a massive cliff of fossilised dunes, reckoned to be about 20 million years old and four times the age of the dunes at Sossusvlei. In front the desert spans countless shades and tones of brown towards the blue-grey Naukluft Mountains that rise sheer from the sea-bed flats of the desert.

Namib Desert Lodge: private desert splendour

Part of the Gondwana Desert Collection, the Namib Desert Lodge is in a private reserve that covers about 10,000 hectares on the edge of the country-sized Namib-Naukluft Park. Here the light plays tricks with textures, shades, shapes, and patterns; and the desert supports a surprising array of hardy and bizarre creatures from pea-sized tok tokkies to pony-sized gazelles with camp tails and elaborate markings. Activities at the lodge include hiking trails; game viewing; afternoon nature drives through the fossilised dunes; and excursions to Sesriem Canyon and Sossusvlei.
