Kulala Wilderness Camp

Kulala Wilderness Camp in Sossusvlei Namibia

Kulala Wilderness Camp is built on a rocky spur that faces west towards the iron-red dunes of the Namib and, of course, the spectacular setting of the dusty desert sun.  Each of the ten en suite rooms is built on an elevated wooden deck – for its visual effect as much as the cooling effect – and is draped with an elegant layer of cotton. Canvas sides help to cool the interior and, along with the verandah and flat-topped roof, offer wide vistas of the desert and its magnificent night sky.

The living area of the Kulala Wilderness Camp is built on a wooden platform with a front that opens out to the desert and the pool deck. Stout tree trunk beams and deep thatch add to the charm of the place and the lounge, dining area and bar are comfortable spaces of quiet contemplation.  Activities include early morning guided game drives to the Sossusvlei dunes, nature drives and walks on the private reserve, day trips into the Naukluft mountains and early morning ballooning as an optional extra.

Kulala Wilderness Camp: fascinating desert experiences

The Namib is the oldest desert in the world and flora and fauna in this fragile ecosystem have developed fascinating attributes to cope with extremes of heat and extended periods of drought. The precarious existence of these plants and animals makes an encounter more poignant and animals you might encounter gemsbok, springbok, wild ostrich, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, hare, jackal and the elusive spotted hyena. The plants and birds in the area all tell a story of hardship, adaptation and survival – a story that is best interpreted by your qualified guide. Kulala Wilderness Lodge offers morning excursions into the Sossusvlei, night drives and guided walks on the reserve and unmissable champagne breakfast balloon flights over the desert as an optional extra.
