Kulala Desert Lodge

Kulala Desert Lodge in Namibia's Sossusvlei

Bordering on the gigantic Namib Naukluft Park, Kulala Desert Lodge is in its own private reserve with a sense of isolation that is exaggerated by the vast plains, desolate dunes and rugged mountains that make up the 21,000ha reserve.  Kulula's design creates a cool retreat from the parched desert. The roofs of the 15 suites have deep thatching to keep cool air in and hot air out; canvas sides and a raised floor help the natural circulation and overhead fans give it a boost.

The private patios at Kulala Desert Lodge have a generous thatch covering and the adobe bathroom at the back has a flat roof for sleeping under the stars on warm nights.  The main lodge also has a thick covering of thatch with gnarled trees for beams; and stone flooring and adobe walls that wouldn't look out of place beside a North African oasis. Of more importance than the architecture are the shaded swimming pool, the bar and the wrap-around verandah that emphasises the staggering scale of this ancient desert.

Kulala Lodge: Flora and Fauna

Kulala means 'to sleep' in Oshiwambo and while your night's sleep at Kulala Desert Lodge may be one of the most peaceful in recorded history, it is the desert that surrounds you that has been in a great state of slumber. The Namib in Namibia , is the oldest desert in the world. Flora and fauna in this fragile ecosystem have developed fascinating attributes to cope with extremes of heat and extended periods of drought. Kulala Desert Lodge overlooks a waterhole that is visited by gemsbok, springbok, wild ostriches, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, hares, jackals and the elusive spotted hyena. The Lodge offers morning excursions into the Sossusvlei, night drives and guided walks on the reserve and – at an extra cost, but unmissable - champagne breakfast balloon flights over the desert.
