Huab Lodge General Information

The towering thatch roof of the living area at Huab Lodge completely fails to dominate its spectacular surroundings. Gnarled camel-thorn trees envelop the building, Damaraland's dense vegetation swallows up the chalets, and tree-covered granite kopjes rise into the deep blue sky. The eight rooms achieve comfort from their simplicity with extra-length beds, bright colours, stone-tiled floors, thatch roofs, private verandas, large windows, and a view of the bush even from the shower.
The living area at Huab Lodge, features a large garden with a naturally-heated pool that, mercifully, lacks the sulphurous reek associated with hot springs and is shaded by a thatched gazebo. In the heat of the day you can cool off in the plunge pool next to the spring or doze in the loungers. Inside is a comfy lounge area, with a fireplace and plenty of reading matter, and a large teak dining table upon which is laid a succession of sumptuous feasts.

Huab Lodge: desert elephants in a private conservancy

When Jan and Suzi van de Reep bought Huab Lodge in 1992 their mission was to restore the degraded, over-grazed and over-hunted region to its former natural state. Thanks to their years of toil we now have 8,000 hectares of rehabilitated wilderness where the desert-adapted elephants can roam again in the company of zebra, kudu, oryx, giraffe, ostrich, springbok, steenbok and a great host of smaller animals, birds and plants. Activities now include guided walks; game drives; self-guided hiking trails; bird watching; San rock art; community interaction; scenic tours; elephant tracking; and stargazing.
