Desert Rhino Camp Information

The Palmwag Concession covers a staggering 450,000 hectares – that's an area twice the size of Mauritius. The private reserve is situated part way between Etosha National Park and the Skeleton Coast in a region known as Damaraland.  Desert Rhino Camp is a rustic mobile-style game camp that moves with the far-roaming rhino and desert-adapted elephants – the stars of this remote and fascinating land and the feature of this exclusive camp. Desert Rhino Camp was until June 2007 known as Palmwag Rhino Camp

Seven East African tents with en suite bathroom and bucket-shower facilities make up the camp; the living area has the same style and comfort with semi-permanent tents overlooking the bewildering vastness of the Damaraland plains.  The camp is run in conjunction with Save The Rhino Trust and activities include rhino tracking in 4WD game drive vehicles and on foot; and game drives and night drives with local trackers and experienced rangers.

Lodge Highlights

  • Remote no-frills mobile camp in a gigantic private concession
  • Comfortable Meru-style tents with en suite bathrooms
  • Coordinated rhino tracking safaris on foot and 4WD game-drive vehicle
  • Spectacular scenery and endless open spaces
  • Plenty of 'regular' game viewing and excellent birding

Desert Rhino Camp: rhino and elephant in the desert?

The rhino and elephant that roam freely in this vast region have adapted to the desert-like conditions both physically and behaviourally. Guides and local trackers at Desert Rhino Camp take you on day and night game drives and walking safaris in search of these prehistoric beasts. Several natural springs in the reserve support a surprising diversity of plants, animals and birds and some of the more exciting finds will include the welwitschia plant, rhino, elephant, Hartmann's mountain zebra, spotted hyena, gemsbok, white-tailed shrike, Herero chat and white-backed mousebird. Plains game and predators are prolific with possible sightings of lion, cheetah, leopard and the brown hyena.
