Susuwe Island Lodge

Susuwe Island Lodge in Northwest Namibia

The Kwando River winds its way across the floodplains of the Caprivi Strip along the Bwabwata National Park's eastern boundary where it forms a labyrinth of channels, oxbow lakes, and islands. Susuwe Island Lodge is a luxurious introduction to the bounteous wilderness of this National Park in eastern Caprivi. The lodge has six enormous chalets, with thatch roofs and barely noticeable from a short distance away, overlooking the river and its floodplains.

Each has a private balcony with plunge pool and a serene vault-like interior of the utmost comfort. The living area is an oxbow-shaped maze of mezzanines, decks, and lounges. Like the chalets, it is built to blend in with the dense canopy of teak, mangosteen and jackalberry trees that cover the island. To honour such luxury, the food, wine, and romantic setting, of which there are several to choose from, might make you wish you'd booked your entire holiday here.

Susuwe Island Lodge: game viewing

Hard though it may be to believe, the location of Susuwe Island Lodge is not purely aesthetic. Here on the Kwando River, wedged between two National Parks, and surrounded by wilderness, the wildlife experience is sensational. Huge herds of elephant and buffalo churn up the waters every day and chances of spotting leopard, sable and roan antelope, tsessebe, lechwe, lion, hyena, wild dog, and a host of birds on any one of your guided game activities – on foot, in car, and on water - is as good as you will get in southern Africa.

  • Six brick and thatch suites
  • En suite bathroom
  • Separate lounge
  • Viewing deck with private plunge pool
  • Open deck, game-viewing platform, and fireplace
  • Lounge, bar and a variety of dining venues
