Air Namibia is Namibia’s national air carrier, and has Hosea Kutako International Airport in
Windhoek as its base.
Air Namibia was originally founded in 1946 as South West Air Transport and then South West Airways. In 1956 South West Airway amalgamated with Oryx Aviation and the company became known as ‘ Suidwes Lugdiens’. In 1966 a company called Namib Air of
Walvis Bay became a subsidiary of Suidwes Lugdiens , but in 1978 the whole company changed its name to ‘ Namib Air’.
It was in 1982 that the Namibian government acquired majority shareholding and the airline was elevated to the position of the Namibia’s principal airline. In 1989 the operated the first flights between
Windhoek,
Cape Town and
Johannesburg, the flights being taken in a Boeing 737 200A
Following Namibia’s independence in 1990, Namib Air is officially renamed
Air Namibia, and a twice weekly flight between
Frankfurt and Windhoek is initiated.
By 1992 Air Namibia has launched a
Windhoek to London flight, and by 1994 this has increased to 3 schedules a week. In 1999 the Frankfurt flight is serviced by a new purchased Boeing 747 400.
In 2002 the flight schedules where optimized allowing guests arriving from Frankfurt to connect with Cape Town and Johannesburg and thus increasing the number of guests who combine Cape Town into a Namibian itinerary.
In 2005 Air Namibia launched a
Windhoek to London Gatwick Flight, using their newly purchased Airbus A340 - 300
