We really do recommend hiring a car and exploring Southern Africa at your own pace. This week-long tour starts off with a world-class Safari in the Sabi Sands Reserve in the
Kruger National Park. When you've done the Big Five, then head south and spend a few days getting to grips with the magical mountain kingdom of
Swaziland. And finish off with a wonderful wildnerness experience in
Umfolozi Hluhluwe Reserve and the famous
St Lucia Wetlands, before driving down to
Durban for your onward arrangements.

Day 1-3: Sabi Sand Reserve, Kruger National Park
Transfer by air from
Johannesburg to Kruger Mpumalanga Airport or a private airstrip within the park - your ranger will collect you and the wilderness experience begins now! You will be staying at
Arathusa Safari Lodge located within the northern sector of the coveted
Sabi Sand Reserve, adjacent to the Kruger National Park.
The Sabi Sand is a private reserve and has many advantages over the Kruger Park itself. Vehicles need not be covered; rangers can go follow animals off the roads; you can go on bush walks; and the night drives, sleep-outs and dinners in the bush will bowl you over. Above all, you and a handful of other guests will have exclusive access to an enormous and pristine game reserve. You have the next few days exploring the bush, getting to grips with the Big Five and going on game drives and guided walks with your expert ranger.
Accommodation: Arathusa Safari Lodge (or similar lodge)
Meals: Full board including local drinks and all game activities
Day 3-5: Forresters Arms, Swaziland
After your last early morning game drive you will check out of Arathusa Game Lodge and drive south through Nelspruit to Malelane. From here you will drive south along the R570 over the Jeppes Reef Border Post into Swaziland. This border post is open from 08H00 to 20H00. You will then drive over Piggs Peak to the
Ezulwini Valley where you will stay at the Forresters Arms Hotel.
A short, scenic, tarred drive from Mbabane, the capital of Swaziland,
Forresters Arms is ideally located for exploring all the attractions of this majestic Kingdom. You have the following day at leisure to savour the sights and sounds of Swaziland. The hotel is situated on 90 ha of mountainous terrain and the area is famous for its wild flowers. You can swim in the river at the Mantenga Falls and visit a local village for a dancing and cultural show.
Accommodation: Forresters Arms (or similar accommodation)
Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Day 5-7: Zululand Tree Lodge, Kwazulu Natal
Check out of Forester's Arms Hotel and drive further over Siphofaneni and Big Bend to the Golela border Post. Once over the border and back in South Africa you will drive along the N2 to Zululand Tree Lodge. Situated next to the
Hluhluwe Game Reserve in Zululand, you have the opportunity to go on a Big Five Safari in this small but densely concentrated reserve. Enjoy game drives here and in the
Ubizane Wildlife Reserve.
And we definitely recommend exploring the
St Lucia Wetlands, a World Heritage Site, with its estuaries and marshlands supporting a large number of wild animals. The sundowner boat cruise along the estuary is well-recommended and is an excellent opportunity to spot crocodiles and hippos basking on the bank or muddy waters.
Accommodation: Zululand Tree Lodge (or similar accommodation)
Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Day 7: Durban and departure
Check out of Zululand Tree Lodge and drive further south along the N2 to Durban to continue with your onward travel arrangements.
NB: You can stop off along the North Coast with its beautiful beaches and tropical waters, or spend a few days getting to grips with the pulsating port city of Durban. Just let us know and we can extend or adjust your itinerary.
