Wilderness Safaris is an operator conspicuous by their relative absence in South Africa, possibly due to their predilection for enormous tracts of uninhabited areas of outstanding beauty. Rocktail Bay Lodge is one exception and a spectacular example it is. Situated in a coastal forest reserve in northern Kwa-Zulu Natal, the lodge is a celebration of the ocean and back-to-basics living. The reserve encompasses the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park, which is a World Heritage Site and the lodge offers exclusive access to beaches, reefs, wetlands and forests – all of them pristine.

Eleven A-frame wood and thatch tree houses are tucked behind the first line of dunes and shaded by a dense canopy of mahogany trees. Each room has an en suite bathroom and a large deck that hovers in the forest canopy like a humming bird on the prowl. The main lodge is a massive elevated wooden platform that opens out into the surrounding forest with a warmth and geniality not found since Granny's baking-bread welcome when you were ten.

Rocktail Bay Lodge has exclusive access to about 30km of some of the world's most beautiful coastline. Bays, inlets, beaches and reefs of the warm Indian Ocean offer the diver, walker, fisherman or pleasure-seeker an unforgettable experience. Activities at the lodge include excellent snorkelling and scuba diving; swimming in the sea or at the lodge; fly-fishing; horse-riding along the beach; local community interaction; bird watching in the forest and bird hide; game drives and, in season, participation in the leatherback and loggerhead turtle research outings.
