South Africa is often described as a world in one country. And with beaches and snow; mountains and semi-desert; sprawling cities and pristine wilderness few would argue.
A self-drive safari to the Kruger Park entails a scenic drive – once you've put some distance between yourself and Jo'burg that is – through the beautiful mountains of Mpumulanga and a mighty descent into the lowveld of the Kruger region.
Driving from Joburg you will ascend a mighty range of mountains, wind through misty villages and then descend a mighty escarpment into the low-lying Kruger Park region. If you have the time, an overnight stop en route is a must as the area has plenty to see and do – and you'll get to stretch your legs and inhale some fresh mountain air while you're at it.

All of the lodges are accessible in a humble sedan. The roads leading to the reserves are all paved and the main gravel roads within are kept in excellent condition.
Sabi Sand, in the south-west is the closest and easiest private reserve to reach from Joburg – allow about 5 hours' driving time – and the route takes you through scenic mountains followed by a dramatic transition to the classic African bush.
The private reserves and the
Kruger Park itself all have strict speed limits up to 50km/h but your average speed will be well below that because all animals, including dung beetles, have right way in these parts. A self-drive safari offers flexibility and a fascinating journey to each lodge. If time is critical and money is not, we recommend a
fly-in safari – the option that places more emphasis on being there, and less on getting there.
