Umlani Bushcamp General Information

Umlani Bushcamp is an intimate extension of the Schiess family and has been since 1989. Formen and Ziggy have risen through the ranks, the former starting out as a tracker, to manage this rustic and charming game lodge in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve. Shadrack, Ginger, Moses, Jimmy and Peter are your Shangaan game guides and trackers; Eliza and Ruth attend to winning culinary awards. Sleeping just 16, accommodation is in reed and thatch huts built in the local Shangaan style – with some essential modifications like en suite bathrooms, flushing toilets and hot running water. The lodge has five double huts and two family huts sleeping four and three. The living area is dedicated to laziness. The bar opens onto deck overlooking the riverbed and a busy waterhole; hammocks hang between the trees around the pool and there is cheeky elevated game viewing hide at a small dam a couple of km from the camp. Dinner is a joyful extravaganza in the candlelit dining room – there is no electricity here – or surrounded by lanterns and torches in the riverbed.

The private nature reserve offers 10,000 ha of game viewing traversing and your guides and trackers take you on morning and evening game drives with all of Africa's famed wildlife to look out for; birding is excellent and morning bush walks are an option for those with the energy and the will power to resist a good doze. Beyond the camp, and easily arranged by your hosts, there are scenic microlight flights, cultural tours, balloon safaris, plenty of outdoor adventure activities, souvenir shops and wildlife rehabilitation centres.

Umlani Bushcamp is in central Timbavati Nature Reserve, which is a mammoth private reserve adjacent to and sharing an unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park. The park has an airfield and Eastgate Airport is about an hour's drive; Joburg is about five hours by car.
