Gwalagwala General Information

Gwalagwala, near the Kruger Park, has all the right ingredients for a successful African safari lodge: Meru-style tented accommodation on elevated wooden decks overlooking a perennial river; a spacious and comfortable living area with a swimming pool and an outdoor dining area; big five game viewing, walking safaris and birdwatching. But what sets Gwalagwala apart from many of the region's more sophisticated lodges is the personal attention and welcoming atmosphere created by owner-managers Ann and Dorian. Don't be surprised to find yourself swapping photos and anecdotes about grandchildren over afternoon tea or jotting down Ann's bobotie recipe.

Game viewing on the Gwalagwala reserve is limited to the graceful plains game creatures, bird watching and fascinating interpretive bush walks; you hop over to the neighbouring private reserve for big five safaris.

Gwalagwala – peace, tranquillity and unspoilt nature beside a river

Gwalagwala is in a spectacular African setting on the banks of the Klaserie River in the northern South African lowveld province of Limpopo. The six luxury tented suites line the river and hide from the day's heat beneath a canopy of gnarled sweetthorn and knobthorn acacia trees. At the water's edge is a thatched gazebo perfect for soaking up the tranquil scenery, watching the numerous riparian and woodland birds and the occasional visit from a giraffe or kudu.

Gwalagwala is a 20-minute transfer from Easgate Airport in Hoedspruit making it easily reachable from almost anywhere in South Africa. The five-hour drive goes by way of many scenic mountain passes and, if you want to break the journey, there are some fabulous places to stay en route.
