The Notten family's bush camp gets right down to business. Situated in the excellent Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, adjacent to the Kruger Park, Notten's Bush Camp is small, intimate and, being family-run, something of a relief from the almost corporate sleek of the big-name lodges that surround it. Each of the eight chalets has a private balcony with a view of the bushveld and an en suite bathroom with bath, shower and hot running water. Hurricane lamps and candles replace electric light for an au naturelle mood that's really rather romantic.

The living area – your home for the next few days – is a charming and inviting open-plan thatched house with a lounge that becomes a large deck overlooking a waterhole and the expanse of the Sabi Sand wilderness. A swimming pool is essential out here in the heat of the day between game drives and bush walks, as is the bush spa with the sounds of nature replacing the tinny mp3s of forest sounds and pan pipes. Dinner is a high table three-course set menu served around a campfire beneath the stars or in the cosy dining room during the rainy season.

Game viewing in the private Sabi Sand Reserve is a rare privilege. Receiving a small fraction of the traffic compared to National Parks, the private reserves can be more accommodating. Your vehicle is completely open on all sides; off-road tracking is allowed, so you can get a picture of more than just a blurry striped tail disappearing into the undergrowth; you can walk through the park – with your armed ranger of course – and experience the bush with all your senses; and you can go on night drives with a spotlight that picks out the fascinating nocturnal creatures.
