Paperbark Retreat

Paperbark Retreat General Information

More a country home than a hotel or lodge of any description, Paperbark Retreat is a destination nature reserve in a picturesque valley near Lydenberg, Mpumalanga. And if you must visit the Kruger National Park, you're only a two-hour drive away – less than the average Londoner's commute.

Accommodation at the ubber-eco-friendly Paperbark Retreat comes in three options: a standard double room and a two-bedroomed family suite comprise the main lodge accommodation and two bungalows in the garden complete the offering. Each has been decorated with love and attention that mixes the owners' charming English roots with their new-found love of Africa. All of the rooms sleep up to four and have en suite bathrooms. All meals and activities are included – alcohol is for your own account – and Will and Carol take great care in ensuring you enjoy your stay. From dinners under the stars to participating in conservation research activities, you will feel a part of this piece of African paradise and may be reluctant to leave, though you will feel better for having visited.

Paperbark Retreat – tranquil and enchanting eco-friendly nature reserve

Paperbark Retreat is in a nature reserve covering a river valley with over 300ha of African bush. Activities include guided bush walks, birding, night drives, conservation research participation, lazing about in rivers and jumping off waterfalls if you dare. All the while looking out for leopards, caracals, civets and other fascinating lesser-known creatures. Your wilderness experience at Paperbark will be intimate and the detail intricate – so much so that seeing a pride of lion lolling under a tree in the nearby Kruger National Park may seem a little tame.
