Hulala Lakeside Lodge General Information

Hulala Lakeside Lodge is a tranquil and comfortable break en route to the Kruger National Park from Joburg. The entrance is shrouded in lush sub-tropical ferns, palms, banana trees and you get the warm fuzzy, country-inn feeling the moment you arrive. The interior is a lively mix of rough-hewn beams, Persian carpets, restored period furniture and leather couches. Accommodation comes in standard, two varieties of suite and the extra special honeymoon suite. All have cosy fireplaces, en suite bathrooms and private patios peeking out through the lush foliage towards the Lake Da Gama.

The hotel has a pool with a terrace for languid afternoon lunches, the Rock Inn Bar is appropriately named with its bulbous dolomite centrepiece and Feathers Restaurant serves fresh à la carte meals. While you're probably en route to the Kruger and keen to get going early the next day, an extra day exploring the area and enjoying the lake will be a relaxed and comfortable treat and there are many attractions nearby – including the Kruger Park itself – that make excellent day trips.

Be sure to arrive in time for that great South African tradition: sundowners. An excuse to drink never came so tempting as a large boat with comfortable chairs chugging around a picturesque lake reflecting the myriad colours of an African sunset. Being off-limits to power boats, the lake remains a source of tranquillity day and night and Hulala Lakeside Lodge has a fleet of canoes, peddle-boats and row boats for you to explore the lake in peace; and they have bass boats with silent trawler motors for the more avid fishing folk. Birdwatching along the marked hiking trails and on the lake is excellent and you should try your hand at the Hulala version of golf, a combination of golf and croquet perhaps invented after a double-bogey or a double-gin too many – perhaps both.
