Rhino Africa uses the term Timbavati to describe the private game reserve areas north of the Sabi Sands.
It includes the reserves of Timbavati, Thornybush, Manyeleti, Klaserie , Kapama and Makalali. The area consists of a number of private lodges most of which are unfenced allowing the game to move freely between them and the Kruger National Park.
The area is home to the big five and staying here you are assured of excellent game viewing and photographic opportunities. The wildlife area is constantly expanding as more and more farmland and hunting concession are being returned to their natural ecological state.

Situated on the very border of Timbavati and the Kruger National Park is
Ngala Main Lodge and the smaller and more intimate
Ngala Tented Camp. The area is well known for large herds of buffalo and elephants and some of the largest prides of lions. Situated in
Thornybush Game Reserve Royal Malewane is an ultra luxurious lodge, and particularly suitable for those who wish to maintain their privacy. The Timbavati area has quite a few tented camps, staying in a tent really gives you a feeling of being in Africa. However fear not – the tents are elegant and full equipped and lay rest to any fears you might have of roughing it. Our favourite tented camps include
Honeyguide Khoka Moya in the
Manyeleti Game Reserve which welcomes families travelling with children.
Tanda Tula in the Timbavati is held in high regard for its cooking .
