It's probably your main reason for visiting East Africa - and rightly so! We know when to go, where to stay and what exactly the Migration entails so give us a call and we will plan your tailormade trip!

Thousands of Wildebeest and Zebra

The Annual Wildebeest and Zebra Migration is essentially the movement of thousands of animals across the grassy plains of East Africa in search of food and water as the seasons change. There is no start or finish as such but we commonly say the migration goes from the Serengeti Plains in a northwesterly direction towards the famous Masai Mara Game Reserve. The exact timing and route of the migration changes from year to year - depending on the rains.

Essentially though the rains hit the Serengeti in January or February allowing the female wildebeest herd to start giving birth. By March or April, the area has dried out and become desolate again so the massive grouping of animals are forced to move northwards towards Lake Victoria where they begin the mating season. After this, they head towards the Masai Mara in June or July and this is where most people come to witness the sight of thousands of animals galloping across the plains and fording raging rivers with crocodiles in wait!

Thousands of Wildebeest and Zebra

Masai Mara and the Migration

Kenya's premier wildlife area is the famous Masai Mara National Reserve. The reserve is well know for its abundant resident wildlife and is one of the few places where it's possible to see the big five during a morning's game drive. However it is perhaps more famous for the annual Wildebeest Migration which occurs between about July and October. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania, to Kenya's Masai Mara and back, crossing crocodile-infested rivers and trying their best to survive predators of the wild. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
