Just a 45-minute flight away from both Nairobi and the Masai Mara, Lake Victoria is not the hardest place in the world to get to. It's harder to leave!
Lake Victoria spans the western reaches of Kenya and borders both Tanzania and Uganda. It is the most densely populated region of Kenya and the biggest town in the area is Kisumu, Kenya's third biggest city after Nairobi and Mombasa.
The lake is only a few hours' drive away from the Masai Mara Game Reserve - or about 45 minutes on a private charter flight. The more adventurous can even take a hot air balloon over the Masai Mara plains and land on the shores of Lake Victoria!
From Nairobi, the trip to Kisumu takes about five hours so most visitors tend to take a 45 minute internal flight from Wilson Airport just outside the city centre. Both
Mfangano Island Camp and
Rusinga Island Lodge can be reached by private flight so leave the city and arrive on an exclusive island!
There is also a train that departs Mombasa and passes through Nairobi on its way to Kisumu for those who enjoy rail travel. It leaves Nairobi every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and takes about 12 hours. Again we recommend the flight!
