Most travellers see Johannesburg as just a transit point on their Safari. But they are mistaken - there is a whole lot worth exploring in the city itself!
- Explore Gold Reef City, theme park, casino and more!
- Have a history lesson at the amazing Apartheid Museum
- Go on a township tour to Soweto and mingle with locals
- Gamble away at Montecasino and savour the bright lights
- Big Five Safari in the Pilanesberg and then relax at Sun City
Contrary to most people's expectations, Johannesburg is well worth exploring with a range of attractions on its doorstep. Some of South Africa's most momentous events took place here and it still without a doubt the most happening city in the country. Get a sense of the inspirational struggle for freedom at the amazing
Apartheid Museum, as well as the
Nelson Mandela Museum. Head to
Gold Reef City which pays tribute to the founding of Johannesburg after the gold rush in the 1890s. There are restaurants galore, a casino, a theme park and all the entertainment options you could think of.
A
township tour is one of the best ways to get to grips with the real Johannesburg. Far removed from the urban jungle of Sandton, the townships are where many of the city's inhabitants reside.
SOWETO (South Western Townships) is a collection of shantytowns - and Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and others still own houses in this area! It is not safe to wander here alone but it is a great day out on an organised tour with a local guide. Further afield, the
Pilanesberg Game Reserve offers an affordable Malaria-free Big Five Safari which can be combined with rest and relaxation at the
Sun City Resort. And of course, there are a range of restaurants, bars and cultural attractions to keep you busy during your stay.
