Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve Information

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve has two beautifully positioned lodges on the mountainside in Gansbaai, just outside Hermanus along the Garden Route. The sweeping views of the Indian Ocean from the main lodges and all the suites are breathtaking. The Garden Lodge is set in a lush indigenous surrounding and offers guests a tranquil haven close to the indigenous gardens which makes for an excellent morning or evening walk. The Forest Lodge further up the hill is more contemporary and sophisticated and the suites are massive, private and stylish with incredible views. There are a host of activities to keep you busy during your stay at Grootbos but the main attraction of the thriving marine life is seeing 40-ton Southern Right Whales just a few metres from your boat.

Getting close to these majestic creatures is a rare privelage. On the same boat trip you will travel to Dyer Island which offers refuge to massive sea bird colonies and a colony of 60 000 Cape Fur Seals. Watching the seals swim and play next the boat is great and you may even be lucky enough to see a Great White Shark on the prowl!  Specialist guides can also take you to explore the tidal rock pools and coastal caves with lots of information about early inhabitants and famous shipwrecks along the coast. Or you can explore deserted beaches all on your own!

Grootbos: 1700 hectares of Fynbos

Fynbos (meaning “fine bush” in Dutch) grows in a 100-200km wide coastal belt stretching from Clanwilliam on the West coast to Port Elizabeth on the Southeast coast. Fynbos forms part of the Cape’s floral kingdom and accounts for half of the surface area and 80% of the plant varieties. The fynbos in the Western regions is more rich and varied than in the Eastern regions.   Grootbos Nature Reserve conserves 1700 hectares of pristine fynbos, the Cape’s unique vegetation type. Within their borders lies a wealth of more than 650 species of indigenous plants. Huge stands of extravagant proteas paint the hillsides and bulbs burst into flower after fire. Pollination, seed dispersal and germination - there is always something happening and a story to be told.  Grootbos has expert botanical guides who will open your eyes to the intricacies of the fynbos ecosystems and leave you with another lasting impression of the wonders of nature.

The Marine Hotel

The Marine is a linen-white hotel on manicured grounds in Hermanus that is perched on a cliff overlooking Walker Bay. A member of the Relais & Chateaux group, the service and comfort is exemplary and the dining outstanding. Standard five-star facilities complete the picture of luxury and sophistication.
Western Cape Hotel & Spa

We think the spa was introduced to sooth stunned guests after their stay at the luxurious hotel; the Western Cape Hotel & Spa is a no-holds-barred resort hotel with a championship golf course and a destination spa. With two restaurants, three bars and a host of activities the resort is a destination in its own right.
