For a serene sojourn into the country, Blue Gum Country Estate offers country-style living amid acres of pasture, vineyards and wheat fields and is close enough to the thronging seaside village of Hermanus for daily doses of activity. This gracious manor house is a shrine to the power of relaxation; decorated with antiques and bright fabrics, the house is protected by towering gums, endless gardens and Aslan the exuberant retriever.

The rooms and suites are enormous and decorated in a South African version of an English country house – stained wood, floral patterns and fabrics in pink, peach and sky blue – or in an African colonial theme – faux hides, off-white fabrics and dark wood furniture. Each room has an en suite bathroom with shower and bath, mini bar, satellite TV, private terraces and views of the gardens and the surrounding hazy mountains.

At Blue Gum, the meals are the hearty country type and of a size that makes relaxation afterwards unavoidable. Your typical day will revolve around food and gentle countrified activities – walking, fishing, boating, swimming, tennis, golf, scenic drives to the coastal wine farms and of course the famous whale-watching spots around Hermanus. Indoors is also a rather enticing option with a roaring fire, board games and a modest library in the lounge; or you can retreat to the privacy of your suite for a soothing bubble bath.
